Adult Division – Fall 2020

We are leaping into fall with full hearts and exciting new opportunities to connect and grow together! Our fall schedule includes both in-studio and live stream options for Adult Ballet and Barre Fitness classes so you will be able to plié and plank with us wherever you are! Our MINDBODY schedule has been updated to reflect all these options, with virtual classes boldly designated as “LIVE STREAM.” Make sure you are signing up for the movement adventure that you seek!

For those who plan to join us in person, please be sure to read through our Building Entry Protocols and Health Check app instructions below prior to your first visit. You will also find copies of our  COVID and liability waivers that you will be required to sign upon entry. Remember to register in advance for our in-studio classes as space is very limited!

The safety and well-being of our community has been and will continue to be our highest priority. We are committed to keeping you moving, growing, and smiling during these continuously evolving times because we know the power of community to unite and uplift our souls. We hope to see you soon!!

Students 15 years through seniors (50+) stay healthy and fit while enjoying the movement and music of dance.

The Adult Division offers stand-alone classes in classical ballet technique, modern, tap, dance exercise, and barre. Students may attend as often as their schedules allow. Although attendance is not mandatory, students are encouraged to attend classes regularly in order to make progress, gain strength and have an enjoyable experience.

Class Descriptions

Ballet

Intro to Ballet: This class is designed for the adult who has a hankering to try a ballet class but is either intimidated, self conscious, or just needs a gentle beginning. Susan Massey will teach the class which will meet for four lessons, touching on history, basic technique, and terminology. Each class will incorporate basic barre work and center work, with hopes of building confidence with each class. After all four lessons, the student will transition into the Ballet I class already offered. Only requirements: commit to all four lessons and come dressed in clothes you can easily move in and ballet shoes!

Ballet I: No experience necessary, however Intro to Adult Ballet I (4 week session) is highly recommended for a better introduction into the ballet world.
Ballet II: A strong class with complete barre, stretching and center work.
Ballet III: For the knowledgeable dancer who can move at an accelerated pace. This is our top level.
Dress Code: Appropriate dancewear includes leotard with tights or athletic pants/shorts with a fitted shirt. Students should have ballet shoes for ballet classes and bare feet for modern class. Please note: socks cannot be worn without shoes in any adult dance classes.

Barre Classes

What better place to take Barre classes than in the home of The State Ballet of Virginia?! The ballet-based Barre workout method encourages individuals to use their own bodyweight as resistance, targeting the arm, thighs, seat, and ab muscles to the point of fatigue, then stretching them for relief and length. Classes are designed to encourage, inspire, and challenge all students, at all fitness levels, from all backgrounds.

Modern & Tap  (Classes suspended at this time)

Modern: Provides the study and practice theory in the principles of modern dance technique at the intermediate level. Emphasis is on body alignment, spatial patterning, strength, flexibility, and kinesthetic awareness. Inspirations are drawn from a broad range of modern dance techniques and rhythmic complexities.

Tap: Tuesday’s class is designed for beginners. No experience necessary! Lace-up shoes with flat heel are best for these tap classes. (Oxford style tap shoes – no shoes with strap and higher heel)

Rhythm and Motion

Come join us at Richmond Ballet for a dance class that will leave you smiling and sweating. This class is perfect for beginners who have never danced before through professional dancers! All dances are pre-choreographed, so it is a fast-paced challenge, but the Teaching Artists will help you along if it’s your first time. It’s not about getting the steps perfect, it’s just about dancing. When in doubt, groove it out! Dress Code: We typically recommend any loose fitting, stretchy or comfortable clothes to move in and dance sneakers or supportive shoes are highly recommended (street sneakers* are fine, just as long as they are comfortable and clean). *please wipe off street sneakers with the towels provided prior to entering the studio for class.

Ballet, Modern, & Tap Class Pricing

There are two payment options for open classes:

Feel free to take any adult class of your choice by purchasing a Class Package that gives you the advantage of a discounted class rate. Single class tuition allows you to pay for individual classes.

  • Single Class: $16
  • 5 Class Package: $72
  • 10 Class Package: $144 (expiring in 4 months)
  • Senior Rate (over 50): 15% discount
  • Student Rate (aged 15+ with valid student ID): 20% discount

Rhythm and Motion Class Pricing

  • Single Class: $12
  • 5 Class Package: $54
  • 10 Class Package: $108
  • Student Rate (aged 15+ with valid student ID): 20% discount
