Year-Long Culminating Performances
Featuring nearly 1000 students from area schools in Richmond, the culminating performances of the year-long program are a testament to the unique and special power of dance to bring communities together. The Richmond year-long program is proudly sponsored by TowneBank.
2018 Jamestown: A New World in Motion
Minds in Motion travels back in time to the establishment of the first permanent English settlement in the New World. In partnership with the Jamestown Rediscovery Center, and loosely inspired by the novel Blood on the River, students retell the story of Jamestown’s founding through the eyes of Samuel Collier, a boy who sailed with the original colonists. Enriched by discoveries still being made at the Jamestown excavation, this remarkable tale of struggle shows how history is alive and can still move us today.
2017 Return to the River
With narration by Chief Anne Richardson of the Rappahannock Tribe, students danced a story from Chief Anne’s own childhood. Embracing the beautiful challenge of preserving cultural identity in contemporary life, Return to the River was a celebration of persistence and a reminder that no matter who we are and what we face, we can all have an impact in the world around us.
2016 The Gift: Ecology In Motion
The Gift follows a young boy and girl as they explore the gifts that nature can bring to the human world, and what may happen should mankind fail to preserve such precious gifts. Inspired by Doug Tallamy and his work in entomology, ecology and wildlife conservation, The Gift reminds us that we all possess the power to make a difference in the health of our planet.
