OUR TECHNIQUE – Using your own bodyweight as resistance, the barre boutique workout targets the muscles in your arms, thighs, seat and abs to the point of fatigue then stretches them for relief and length. Our effective process, called isometric interval training, includes chiseling arm exercises, intense thigh and seat sequences, waist-sculpting ab moves and lengthening stretches. It’s not easy, but that’s precisely why it works.

Our classes are designed to get you farther, faster.

Barre: 60-Our signature class integrates the fat burning format of interval training, the muscle shaping technique of isometrics, the elongating principles of dance conditioning and the science of physical therapy to create a revolutionary new workout that quickly and safely reshapes your entire body.

Express Barre: 45-This condensed version of our signature offers the benefits of our 60 minute class in an intense 45 minute format. Executed at a rapid pace, this class is recommended for clients who have taken at least three classes.

Barre Stretch: 60-This class is designed to help you release stress, increase flexibility and reduce stiffness throughout your entire body. At the conclusion of each class you will stand taller, your body will feel lengthened, and your mind will be at ease as a result of these fluid movements.

Cardio Barre: 60-Major cardio minus the impact. Chisel every inch of your body with this revolutionary class designed to rev up your heart-rate while you strengthen, lengthen and tone your muscles. Designed for maximum calorie burn (up to 700 calories!), come prepared to sweat.

Meet your motivators!

Lauren Fagone was a professional dancer with Richmond Ballet from 2001-2015, performing leading roles in works that span the spectrum of classical and contemporary ballet. After the conclusion of her performing career, Fagone became Chief Concept Officer of The Barre Boutique where she codified a technique founded in her extensive knowledge of the anatomical principles of alignment; recruited, trained, and leads a team of instructors, and continues to grow a community founded on mutual support, empowerment, and inclusivity. Fagone maintains her connection to the dance world through work as a repetiteur and guest ballet master, having worked with BalletMet, Sacramento Ballet, Guangzhou Ballet, and Cincinnati Ballet. 

Elena Bello grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey, where she became a part of the National Dance Institute program. She then auditioned for the School of American Ballet (SAB) in New York City. After being accepted into SAB, she spent four years there and found her love for ballet. Elena moved to South Carolina to attend the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. After graduating, she spent two years studying dance at Purchase College before auditioning for Richmond Ballet. She spent two years as an apprentice and one year in Richmond Ballet II, and is now enjoying her sixth season as a part of the Richmond Ballet professional company. In the summers, Elena enjoys teaching at Rosie’s Theater Kids in New York City.

Sarah Ruppel Bullis began her dance studies in Maryland at the age of 4 with Ballet Theatre of Maryland and later at the Kirov Academy and Washington School of Ballet.  After graduating high school, she studied in the B.F.A program of the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati for 1 year and then with Edward Ellison in New York City before joining the Richmond Ballet as a trainee and later the Sarasota Ballet of Florida. She began her teaching career in 2010 with the Richmond Ballet as a children’s division faculty member, and currently teaches in the adult ballet division and is one of four instructors for the Rhythm and Motions dance aerobic workout program. She also teaches creative movement and ballet classes at the JCC, Country Club of Virginia, Regency Dance Academy, Cartwheels and Coffee and the Goddard School of Short Pump. She is thrilled to add Barre classes to her repertoire!

Abi Goldstein, of Sarasota, Florida, began her professional training at The Sarasota Ballet School. She attended summer programs at The School of American Ballet and The Miami City Ballet School. As a trainee at the Boston Ballet for two seasons, Abi performed with both the second and professional companies. She is a member of the Richmond Ballet’s professional company and is excited to welcome you to our barre!

 

 

Melissa Robinson, originally from Sykesville, Maryland, began dancing at the Carroll County Dance Center and eventually graduated from the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington DC. Melissa progressed through Richmond Ballet’s trainee program and Richmond Ballet II before joining the company in 2016. In her spare time, Melissa enjoys spending time with her family and her dog, Harper.

 

 

FAQ’s

What do you do in a barre boutique class?
The class begins with a warm up and sequence of upper-body exercises which includes free weights, push-ups, plank positions and specific exercises that target the bicep, tricep, shoulder, chest and back muscles. Students then use the ballet barre to focus on the thigh, seat and abdominal muscles. The abdominal wall is also strengthened through a series of “C Curve” exercises and the thigh and seat muscles are worked with a complete routine of back “dancing.”

Do I need to have a background in dance?
Not at all! Our technique was designed to encourage, inspire and challenge all individuals, at all fitness levels from all backgrounds!

How often should I attend class?
To see significant results, we recommend that students take class 3-4 times per week. Beginners are encouraged to take class often to gain a better understanding of the positions and to build muscle memory and efficiency. Students experiencing soreness are also encouraged to attend class often, even on consecutive days.

Muscle soreness and stiffness usually happens to people who are just beginning an exercise program or to those who work the same set of muscles in a new and different way. Because of the large variety of strength and stamina building variations at the barre boutique at Richmond Ballet, students may feel some muscle soreness after every class. Sore muscles will have ample opportunity to be stretched and relaxed during class because of the method’s emphasis on musculoskeletal stretching.

Intense isometric movements are used to tone muscles, which are fully stretched after each set of exercises. Instructors offer personalized attention to perfect posture and body alignment and encourage students to work at their optimal level. Lively and fun music helps students stay focused and work even harder.

What should I wear?
It is most important that you are comfortable and ready to move!  Workout or yoga pants paired with a tank or tee is the perfect combination.

Can I take class if I am pregnant or recently had a baby?
Moderate exercise during and post pregnancy can help women feel healthy and fit. Many postnatal students assert that this system of exercise helped them enjoy a smooth pregnancy and eased recovery after delivery. All pre and postnatal woman should consult their physician before beginning any exercise regimen. Pregnant women must present written consent from their doctor before they can take class and must notify their instructor to ensure that instructors can teach appropriate modifications.

Parking: We are located in the heart of downtown Richmond at 407 East Canal Street. Free parking is available in the Richmond Ballet lot directly next to the Ballet building at all times. After 5pm on weekdays, you may park in the blue spots in the Canal Street lot (the lot across Canal Street from the Ballet building) at no charge. Street parking is also available.
