The Gift of Storytelling

January 10th, 2019

It’s the New Year, time of resolutions and new beginnings. In Minds In Motion, we’re also starting a new chapter—literally.

Our story this year comes to us courtesy of the West African trickster god, Anansi.

Anansi received the gift of stories from the Sky King (or stole them, in some versions) and , in turn, gave those stories to humankind.

Our dancers have already met Anansi—voiced by our talented teaching team—and learned why Thunder and Lightning have to stay in the sky, instead of living with humans. (Lightning has impulse control issues.)

For the new year, we have begun the story of how a small boy tries to defeat a very large snake, using only a calabash gourd. Best of luck to him—that is not a small snake. And not a very friendly one either…

This, and other stories from Anansi, will be featured in our culminating performances in April!
