Richmond Ballet, The State Ballet of Virginia, announced its $10 million Road to the Future Campaign on Wednesday, April 19, 2017. Virginia’s acclaimed professional ballet company, which has toured The Kennedy Center, New York, London, and in 2015, a four-city tour in China, announced the public phase of the campaign during a celebration event Wednesday evening at Dominion Resources’ corporate headquarters on the James River in Richmond, Virginia. "I remember Maggie as Clara in the Nutcracker 1997…in some of the shows, I played Mrs Silberhaus, her mother, and I remember her as this little girl with stars in her eyes and such focus on the role she was about to portray. It was apparent back then that the ballet bug had bit her and besides her obvious beauty, she had enormous talent to go with it. She came into the company after I had left RB, but since I still live in Richmond, I’ve been able to see her entire career... from apprentice, to the company, and now to an accomplished artist whose body of work would impress any of her peers. I’m also privileged to now call Maggie a friend. Earlier this year, I saw her performance in New York in Carmen de Lavallade's autobiographical show. Invited by Carmen herself (wow) to be the sole dancer in the show...I was blown away by her command for the stage, all the while being sensitive to the story of the legend she was representing. Her performance was so thoughtful and genuine that she had the audience really believing we were experiencing Carmen's younger self. Having seen her in so many amazing roles over the years, this for me was definitely a defining moment for her.   • We will walk down memory lane with a few #MaggieMoments over the next few weeks as we savor our fond memories of her incredible talents! 💙 First to walk down memory lane is SRB Teacher and Company Character Artist, Susan Israel Massey. "Maggie was a student of mine for a large chunk of her ballet training. She showed an inclination for the technique from the beginning and also an early passion for performing. In Lower III near the end of the year when we learned to tie ribbons on our very first pair of pointe shoes, always a much anticipated and magical day! Ribbons can look pretty sloppy for the first few sessions, with beginners, but I distinctly remember how nicely Maggie tied hers right from the get-go. She then got up, joined her classmates at the barre and, with my okay, got up on her pointes. An audible gasp came in unison from her classmates but not from Maggie. She just smiled and looked at home on her beautiful pointed feet. It was a little window into what was to become. She was always a joy to have in the classroom because she was so receptive and took such delight in moving.
